What is Pancake Day?

A friend asked me what Pancake Day is or why we eat pancakes on ‘Fat Tuesday’. Google and Wikki are wonderful things

“Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Tuesday, Pancake Day, Mardi Gras, and Fat Tuesday) is the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Shrove Tuesday is observed mainly in English speaking countries[citation needed], especially Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States but is also observed in the Philippines and Germany. Shrove Tuesday is linked to Easter, so its date changes on an annual basis.

In most traditions the day is known for the eating of pancakes before the start of Lent. Pancakes are eaten as they are made out of the main foods available, sugar, fat, flour and eggs, whose consumption was traditionally restricted during the ritual fasting associated with Lent.”

Thought that summed it up pretty well :0)

Pancake Day

One of the joys of being cross cultural is that you can celebrate more holidays!

We celebrate ‘Pancake Day’ and still call it that. I have been very poorly today and felt very much under the weather, so although I didn’t eat any of these…

…I made them for everyone else.

It is always a good chance for us to talk about as a family why we celebrate Pancake Day, Lent, Easter. What we may be giving up or doing differently during the next 40 days in the lead up to Easter.

And, yes, we eat crepes with lemon and sugar.

Monday Meditation February 20, 2012

Romans 8:38-39
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,  neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

question of the day

Me: so are you feeling settled in yet?

Ans: Well, 11 months after moving here (from Ireland) I can’t decide if I am settle or it is just a resignation that this is now where I live.

Wow, for many reasons this answer hit me in the gut and, yet it is a great articulation of the ‘acceptance’ phase of a move.

Monday Meditations 13 February 2012

With Valentines Day tomorrow and in a world where it is all about what we get, for this week let’s focus on what we give….

It really is as simple as

Ephesians 5:21

21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Where I Belong

Building 429 sing a song titled ‘Where I Belong’ as an ATCK (Adult Third Culture Kid0 I cry every. single. time. I hear this song.

It is said that ATCKs never really feel at home anywhere – except maybe an airplane….

Building 429

Where I Belong

Building 429

Sometimes it feels like
I’m watching From the outside
 Sometimes it feels like
I’m breathing But am I alive?
I will keep searching for answers
That aren’t here to find
(Chorus)
All I know is I’m not home yet
This is not where I belong
Take this world and give me Jesus
This is not where I belong
So when the walls come falling down on me
And when I’m lost in the current of a raging sea
I have this blessed assurance holding me.
Chorus
When the earth shakes
I wanna be found in You
When the lights fade
I wanna be found in You
